Honor our troops at Denver's Veteran's Day Celebration

KUSA - Veterans Day is Nov. 11, but a city-wide event in Denver to support our troops will take place Saturday, Nov. 9.

At this year's event, organizers are on a mission to increase attendance.

"The message is simple," Izzy Abbass from University of Colorado Denver's Office of Veteran Student Services said. "We're just trying to help the men and women who've done so much for our country."

It's an all day event that starts at 8:00 A.M. with a 5K run and ends with fireworks at 6 P.M. There is a registration fee for the 5K. However, everything else is free.

8 a.m. - 5K run- Auraria Campus
10 a.m. - Parade
11:30 a.m. - Remembrance Ceremony- Civic Center Park
12:30 p.m.- Family Fun Festival- Auraria Campus
5 p.m.- Final salute/ celebration begins- Auraria Campus
5:30 p.m.- Presentation of medals to "Forgotten Heroes" (those who never received their medals publicly)- Auraria
6 p.m. Grand fireworks finale- Auraria

The events usually attracts about 10,000 people, while St. Patrick's Day events can draw more than 250,000 people.

"We want to make Denver the Hallmark of Veteran Celebrations in the west." Abbass said.

Abbass also directs the Boots in Suits professional career mentorship program at CU Denver.

This program matches college juniors, seniors and graduate students with a mentor in the community.

While it's not always a Veteran, the mentor helps the students with the career path they want to get into.
