DENVER-Many of us will be braving these cold temperatures for work, holiday shopping or even upcoming events like the Parade of Lights or the Broncos game.

Experts at REI in Denver say it's important for people to layer. If you don't plan on being outside for a long period of time, they recommend wearing at least two layers in addition to a hat, gloves, a scarf and a heavy or insulated jacket.

Experts also say to wear boots with a thick rubber bottom. If you plan on being outside in freezing temperatures for a long period of time, four layers of clothing is recommended, especially items made out of wool. Experts say it keeps the moisture out and helps to insulate the body.

Dr. John Torres, 9NEWS medical expert, says not dressing appropriately for the cold weather can result in hypothermia and frostbite. Dr. John says the warning signs for frostbite are redness, numbness and a tingling sensation. Once the extremity goes completely numb and is hard to the touch, that could mean frostbite as already set in and medical attention is needed.

"The cold temperature can cause a lot of problems, mainly frostbite, hypothermia they can sneak up on you they can come real quick and they can effect you real quickly and those can be life long effects you're dealing with," Dr. John Torres said.

Experts say it is possible to enjoy outdoor events even in extreme temperatures, but preparing for the weather should be taken seriously.
