Greeley, CO - A jury found a former funeral director guilty of forging funeral contracts to defraud the Weld County Department of Human Services out of thousands of dollars.
On Thursday, Paul Acuna was convicted of one count of theft and 11 counts of forgery.
While working as director of Paul's Funeral Service and Cremation, Acuna filed false funeral contracts with the Weld County Department of Human Services to meet qualifications for financial reimbursements to assist low-income families with funeral costs.
He trimmed costs off the submitted contracts to reflect services at or beneath the $2,500 bench mark, even though the customers paid the full price to Acuna.
Prosecutors say instead of reimbursing the families with the money as required, he pocketed 11 separate payments, totaling $13,589.84.
A sentencing hearing has not been scheduled.
