GOLDEN - Golden lifted evacuations late Tuesday night following fears that an ice jam break in Clear Creek may slam into homes.

The City of Golden evacuated the Clear Creek RV park and the Canyon Side Condos Tuesday evening.

The city said a wall of water, which was at approximately 4 feet high when it hit the mouth of the canyon, was expected to flow into Golden.

The city said later in the evening that the threat of flooding had passed. The city said the water may have went under the ice.

A stream flood advisory was issued for Golden until 8 a.m.

An evacuation center was set up at the Golden Community Center near 10th Avenue. Ten people checked into the shelter, according to the American Red Cross, but the shelter was soon shut down when the evacuation order was lifted.

Parts of Clear Creek froze so quickly last week, that there are few good places for flowing water to go.

Over the weekend, water underneath the ice starting pouring into parts of town.

The city says the water headed toward Golden did not dissipate as much as it hoped.

The city will monitor the water levels overnight.
