COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Springs Police Chief Peter Carey is asking for more money because up to 5,000 calls a month to 911 are not being answered.

The city council has cut $400,000 from the police budget and will consider the police chief's objections to the cuts on Wednesday.

According to the Colorado Springs Gazette, officials say call volume is growing and staffing is not keeping up.

The 911 call center employs 34 full-time emergency call-takers covering three eight-hour shifts around the clock.

Carey wants to add six full-time call-takers.
