KUSA - After the shooting at Arapahoe High School Friday, many parents and students are worried that something like that could happen at their school.
9NEWS psychologist Max Wachtel crunched the numbers to determine the odds of a shooting happening at a particular school.
He took the average number of school shootings per year and compared it to the number of schools in the country.
Wachtel said the chance of a shooting happening at a specific K-12 school is approximately 1 in 53,925:
High school: 1 in 21,000.
Elementary or middle school: 1 in 141,463.
Wachtel said while the numbers prove school shootings are rare, we may still worry. He said the best advice is to trust that logical part of your brain and remember how rare school shootings are.
