WESTMINSTER - A woman was able to cling to an ice shelf and stay afloat until rescuers got to her after falling through middle of an iced-over pond at The Westin Westminster, the Westminster Police Department said.

At 11:37 p.m., police said that someone reported a woman had fallen through the ice. Within three or four minutes after the first call, rescuers had pulled the woman from the icy waters.

She is being treated for hypothermia and is expected to be okay, according to police.

Police did not say if it was known why the woman was on the ice, but did say that the middle of the pond isn't frozen.

Almost exactly one year ago, the body of a Westminster man was found in one of several ponds that surround The Westin Westminster located at 10600 Westminster Boulevard.

36-year-old John Lucas Edwards' body was found in a pond after disappearing from a company holiday party in the early morning hours of December 9.

Co-workers reported that Lucas appeared intoxicated when he left the party and were concerned that he might have drank too much.

Divers from the Westminster Fire Department and Thornton Fire Department searched several ponds that surrounded the hotel in the days after his disappearance.

His body was found on December 17, eight days after he was last seen.

Edwards was a father of a 5-year-old and a 3-year-old.

Westminster Fire officials say after that incident, the city approved and installed lighting improvements around the pond.

They say in this case, the woman was 70-feet out on the pond.

They warn that no one should be walking on ice anywhere in the metro area right now, considering the recent warm temperatures.
