LITTLETON - A man accused of refusing to provide medical care for his dog is off to jail for the next six months.

David Henry Lynch, 60, was convicted of misdemeanor animal abuse in Douglas County after a jury found him guilty.

The six-month jail sentence is rare in such a case, according to prosecutors.

Herschel, a Cocker Spaniel, was found in Lynch's home last year. Police say the home was full of clutter and feces.

Herschel was in "deplorable condition," prosecutors said. The dog's hair was falling out and he appeared to be extremely malnourished. Both of Herschel's eyes had to be removed.

After his adoption, Herschel lived for another year in much better conditions under the care of a different family.

"The best part of this case for me was I able to give Herschel a voice and I was able to speak for him and secure justice," prosecutor Justie Coyne said.

Lynch began serving his time on Friday.
