KUSA - Thousands of Christmas toys will require batteries of every size over the next few days.

Because virtually none of us have a meter to test batteries for a charge. 9NEWS discovered a fairly simple way to learn how fresh a battery might be.

Simply hold the battery over a solid surface, about an inch up, and release it. If the battery stands on its own, it still has a usable charge. If it bounces and falls over with every drop, that usually means the batter is dead.

9NEWS found an online video that shows the test, and we have tried it ourselves hundreds of times. It's usually pretty fool-proof once you've mastered the drop. At the very least, it will provide a few minutes of entertainment for the kids as they work to see if their batteries are "good" or "bad" this Christmas.

The test seems to work on AA, AAA, C, D batteries.
