DENVER - The Denver Department of Excise and Licenses Friday issued a total of 34 retail marijuana business licenses.

These first applicants to receive a retail marijuana business license have completed the state and city licensing processes, picked up the licenses and are able to open on Jan. 1 if they choose to do so:

• 14 retail marijuana stores
• 17 retail marijuana grow facilities
• 3 retail marijuana infused product manufacturers

Denver is one of 19 municipalities and seven counties in Colorado that will allow retail sales of recreational pot to those 21 and older under voter-approved Amendment 64.

Only existing medical marijuana businesses in Denver are now allowed to make the transition to recreational sales.

The state has approved 348 marijuana business licenses in Colorado, but most won't be open Wednesday because of local licensing requirements.
