KUSA - As Denver Broncos fans celebrated back-to-back Super Bowl wins, Troy Leyba's family grieved the loss of a brother.

The 38-year-old Navy veteran was enjoying pre-game festivities in downtown Denver in 1999 before he was stabbed to death in the early morning hours of Super Bowl Sunday.

It appears the killer stole Leyba's boots but nothing else. The murder weapon was never recovered.

Leyba's sister says he often played pool in downtown Denver bars, and he sometimes carried extra clothes to give to people in need on the streets.

"One of the things he liked to do was gather up clothing and take them to the homeless," Tina Terry said.

Just after 2 a.m. on January 31, 1999, the bars had closed, and Troy was heading home. Police say he was waiting for a bus at the RTD turnaround near Broadway and West Colfax Avenue.

A witness told investigators someone attacked Leyba, wrestling and stabbing. Leyba was found bleeding on the steps of the old Denver Post building. He later died. A few days after the crime, police used the witness description to create a sketch of the killer.

"I am hoping someone knows who that is, and they will call," Denver cold case homicide Det. Marty Smith said. "Numerous detectives have spent countless hours on this case trying to develop a suspect."

Detectives do not believe Leyba was involved in any disputes in the bars that night. They have not ruled out the possibility of a transient person committing the murder as a crime of opportunity. Nearly 15 years later, the killer may still be walking the streets.

"We are left behind with no answers," Terry said. "We feel like we are victims, too, because they took someone we loved away from us. We will never see Troy again."
