EVANS - Johnny Briones has one of the best memories in the country.
The 19-year-old Colorado School of Mines student earned the title "Grandmaster of Memory" at the 22nd annual Memory Championships in London roughly a month ago.
He is one of only four Americans to ever get that distinction.
The process began when he started working out and saw the progress his body made.
"From there, I was like, 'I'm really fit. Can my mind be fit? Is there mental exercises you could do?'" Briones said.
He read up on the topic. He started practicing. He can now memorize every card in a deck - in the correct order - in less than a minute.
He pictures each card as an image and takes three cards at a time and creates a story with a location.
It's one of many tricks he's learned as he's honed his craft.
He says he spent 30 hours a week practicing in the run-up to the international competition.
