ST. LOUIS COUNTY - A United States Postal Service truck caught fire Tuesday afternoon.

The Florissant Valley Fire Protection responded to the scene on Sassafras Manor in Calverton Park. The fire chief says the driver slid into a snow bank and tried but failed to get out of it.

The engine overheated and the truck caught fire. It appears most of the mail was destroyed.

Valerie L. Welsch, a spokesperson for the Postal Service, says some of the mail was damaged, but most of it was retrieved from the truck before it was damaged.

Postal inspectors are headed to the scene to secure the mail. Undamaged mail will be delivered. Damaged mail will be sent back to the post office. If postal workers can read an address on a damaged piece, it will be placed in a plastic bag and mailed with a notice about the damage.

No one was injured.
