AURORA -The cause of a fire at the Carson Apartment Complex in Aurora is under investigation.

The fire was reported just before 5 a.m. Saturday morning. Crews arrived to find an apartment on the third floor of a building on fire. The Red Cross says more than 60 people have been displaced.

Evacuated residents like Jennifer Angstead say the flames spread very quickly.

"It was really hard to breathe. There was a lot of smoke and my eyes started burning. My main concern was just, get out of the building."

Angstead was in the apartment with her godson, mother, two brothers, sister and two cats at the time of the fire.

"The cats stayed in there. We didn't have enough time to grab any clothes, shoes, nothing."
The arson team is also investigating after neighbors say they saw something suspicious leading up to the fire.

"A lot of witnesses said there were a lot of drunk teenagers shooting off fireworks at our building"

Darin Almanza lives directly below the apartment that caught fire. He says the people who live there told him those fireworks are what sparked the flames.

"That's what woke them up. It was like an artillery show going off. Then they saw the colors," Almanza explains, "they looked out the window, saw another one coming in their direction and everything was already catching on fire."

Crews eventually let some residents back inside to grab what they could. Residents will likely not be allowed back in the building for a couple of days. The Red Cross was also at the complex helping displaced residents with everything from food, to shelter.

As the investigation continues, residents say they're glad no one was hurt and are happy for what they still have.

"It makes me appreciate life and what I have. It makes me appreciate my family."
