TAMPA, Fla. - Two people were shot at a Tampa-area movie theater after an apparent argument over texting. One of the victims has died.
It happened at Cobb Theater's Grove 16 & CineBistro on Monday afternoon. The Pasco County Sheriff's Office says two couples were sitting in front of each other, getting ready to watch the movie Lone Survivor.
Sheriff Chris Nocco says the male victim was on his phone and texting before the movie began, which allegedly aggravated the couple behind him. An argument between the couples broke out, and the male suspect took out a gun and shot the man and woman sitting in front of him.
No charges have been reported.
Both victims were transported to an area hospital, where the man was pronounced dead. The woman reportedly has non-life threatening injuries.
A good Samaritan inside the theater was able to detain the suspect until deputies arrived. The theater was evacuated without incident.
Sheriff Nocco describes the shooting as an "isolated incident" and that the two couples did not know each other.
Hours after the shooting, Cobb Theatres issued the following statement:
"We are deeply saddened by the events that occurred earlier today, and our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and their families. The theatre is currently closed, and we are actively working with the sheriff's office on this investigation. This was an isolated altercation between two guests that escalated unexpectedly. The safety, security and comfort of our guests and team members are always our top priorities, and we are truly heartbroken by this incident."
