DENVER - It was the unsolicited plug heard around the country. Following a playoff win over the San Diego Chargers, Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning told the press, "What's weighing on my mind is when can I get a Bud Light in my mouth after this win - priority number one."
Strange Brewing Company's Jules Hoekstra jokingly says her reaction "was a gasp." Strange Brewing Co. is the closest craft brewer to Sports Authority Field at only four blocks away.
"While we like that Peyton can appreciate our large brewing industry in Colorado... we would love if he could support our small brewing community," Hoekstra said.
Over at Denver Beer Company, they're big Broncos fans. But co-owner Charlie Berger had to throw a penalty flag when it comes to Manning's taste.
"Peyton said that? Peyton Manning? He's in Denver," Berger said. "He's the quarterback of the DENVER Broncos. In Denver, we know beer. Peyton should stick to football; we'll stick to beer."
Both breweries good-naturedly invited Manning to visit and find a new favorite.
"Peyton, we have 16 beers on tap. I'm sure out of all of those beers you can find something that you would like and possibly even love and drink for many days to come," offered Hoekstra.
Berger is optimistic. "Hopefully next week in the press conference, he'll say, 'I can't wait to get a graham cracker porter in my mouth.' I hope so."
Manning isn't a paid pitch man for Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Bud Light. But Berger couldn't help poking fun at Papa John's. Manning appears in ads and owns 21 stores.
"Remember Peyton: better ingredients, better beer," Berger said.
