DENVER (AP) - Democratic Gov. John Hickenlooper is supporting a campaign by Colorado Republicans to bring the 2016 national GOP convention to Denver.

The Denver Post reported Thursday that Hickenlooper's spokesman confirmed he would back the bid.

A spokeswoman for Denver Mayor Michael Hancock, also a Democrat, says he is open to the idea, but no host committee has been formed so his potential role hasn't been determined.

A private lunch meeting to kick off the bid is planned Friday. Hickenlooper is scheduled to attend, along with former Sen. Hank Brown, a Republican.

The Democrats held their national convention in Denver in 2008, formally nominating Barack Obama for his first term.
