LAKEWOOD - A Lakewood man has been arrested and charged with child abuse after a 1-year-old girl was hospitalized with severe lacerations, bruises and fractures to her body.
The baby and her mother moved in with relatives, Kayla and Brandon Creese, in August.
Police believe Brandon Creese, 25, was responsible for the abuse. According to court documents, other children living in the home told police they witnessed Creese hold the 1-year-old upside down and shake, pinch and punch the baby.
Authorities began their investigation about five weeks ago, when the baby was taken to the hospital. The child's mother told police she thought her baby was under the weather because there were white sores in her mouth.
Hospital staff found injuries all over the baby's body that did not appear to be accidental.
Kayla believes the allegations against her husband are false.
"To put my husband behind bars is wrong," she explained. "I've taken my sister in and took care of her daughter, and this is how I get repaid."
She told 9NEWS her husband was never alone with the abused child and that he never abused his own children.
Kayla says her five children were taken from her after the allegations surfaced. She says she is confident the truth will eventually surface.
Creese appeared in court Friday. He is due back in court Jan. 24. Creese is currently being held at the Jefferson County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
