KUSA - Xcel is warning customers about a phone scam that targets businesses.
The company says scammers are getting smarter and more creative.
In the past 6 months Xcel says they've put out six scam alerts for customers.
A local business that did not want to be identified said it lost more than $400 after scammers called them saying the bill had not been paid.
That business tells 9NEWS the scammers knew their exact bill amount, and that 'Xcel Energy' came up on caller ID.
The scammers threatened to cut off the electricity if the bill wasn't paid in 45 minutes.
So the business paid up.
Xcel says its tough to trace scammers, so regardless of how legitimate a phone call may seem - do not pay.
Instead - call the company directly.
Xcel also wants to remind customers they do not call. They alert you through bills and notices.
