GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet says he hopes to restore millions of dollars in federal funding to counties through the farm bill.

The funding goes to counties that contain untaxable federal land and was dropped from the budget bill passed last week. Counties in Colorado and Wyoming with lots of public land rely upon the program, called payment in lieu of taxes.

The Daily Sentinel reported that Bennet visited with officials in Mesa County in Grand Junction Monday to help make his case for why the funding should be restored.

Bennet is a member of a conference committee working out differences between the House and Senate versions of the farm bill.

He said putting the money in the farm bill might give it a reliable home.
