KUSA - Since 2011, we've watched moms transform in the 9NEWS Bikini Body After Baby series. They've gone from struggling in the gym to sporting six-pack abs after months of consistent exercise and healthy eating. But this year, another group wanted a piece of the proverbial fitness pie: Dads
For the first time, men are being included in the Bikini Body After Baby series. But, instead of bikini, think "briefs."
"I've always liked to work out," said 28-year-old Fritz Fouts. "But I've never taken it to that level."
Fouts was persuaded to submit his entry by his wife, Danielle. She's watched the series for years, hoping to, one day, be chosen. When she heard the series was accepting submissions from couples, the decided to apply.
"I wouldn't want to do it without him," she said.
The young couple has already experienced their share of struggles. Their journey to becoming parents was a hard one.
"We had four miscarriages," said Danielle, adding that medication following those miscarriages made her constantly sick. And weight loss wasn't the number one priority to this mom of three.
"When you get pregnant, your whole world changes. The things that were important to you before are no longer important," said Danielle who works with her husband rehabbing houses.
Now that their family is complete, Danielle is ready to be healthy and drop the pregnancy pounds.
"I am just ready to get my body back," she said. "I don't recognize myself."
Another person who doesn't recognize the reflection she sees in the mirror is 46-year-old Patty Fantauzzo.
"My body is deteriorating right in front of me," she said.
For a year, Fantauzzo battled breast cancer. She underwent chemotherapy and a double mastectomy.
"I've finished chemotherapy and radiation,"she said. "And I've started the reconstruction process."
Patty says one side effect of her treatment has stayed with here.
"I've gained 20 pounds," she said, relating her weight gain to the medication she has had to take. "I don't feel comfortable. I don't feel pretty."
Her husband, Steve Fantauzzo, tells her the exact opposite.
"I don't think she really takes it in when I tell her that she's beautiful," said the 47-year-old.
So he decided to help his wife regain her confidence by agreeing to sign up with her for the 9NEWS Bikini Body After Baby challenge.
"Through everything we've been through, I think it's made us stronger," he said. "This gives us an opportunity to get on a pathway to a better life."
