KUSA - Anti-gang activist Terrance Roberts appeared in court on Monday for an arraignment hearing. His arraignment was delayed until March 3.

Police say Roberts shot a man during a community rally Roberts helped organize in Park Hill.

Roberts says the gangs were calling him things like "snitch" and said he was telling the police about the crime happening in the neighborhood.

"Even leading up to this incident, I was doing everything I was telling the community I would do," Roberts said. "I was minding my own business and really doing what I told the community I would do."

Roberts says he was setting up for the Black Unity Rally when 20 gang members from the Bloods surrounded him. He said he was threatened. Police say when they arrived on scene witnesses said they heard five gunshots and Roberts was taken to jail and charged with attempted first-degree murder.

"When you're working as closely with the streets as I have, I think it's inevitable that you're going to find yourself in this predicament. The rejection of the message in recent weeks - I felt there was a possibility that I could be killed and get my life taken or have to defend myself," Roberts said.

After years of working with the community and creating Prodigal Son, a nonprofit that works to keep kids out of gangs, Roberts finds himself being charged with the same type of violence he has tried to stop.
