SOCHI, Russia - The excitement can already be felt in Sochi, Russia, where the Olympic competition is about to begin. Organizers have done a couple of practice runs already.

One volunteer told 9NEWS crew in Sochi they were forbidden to bring in their cell phones to those practices to keep the element of surprise for Friday. There are 25,000 volunteers at the Olympics who are mostly Russian.

So many people wanted to participate, so there was a contest to be selected.

While people help each other in Russia quite a bit, volunteerism as we think of it in America is not wide spread.

There are certainly other cultural differences volunteers from overseas have already noticed - starting with how people stand in line here or queue.

"They are different," said Olivia, a volunteer from France. "They have a different way to queue. There is no queue here."

"I think that's the most important thing, you just fight to get on the bus," said volunteer from Mexico, Maria Delgado.

"People seem to be not very friendly," Olivia added.

9NEWS reporter Anastasiya Bolton has however observed a slight deviation from that behavior. 9NEWS Anchor and Reporter Cheryl Preheim has been greeting and smiling at people, and they have been responding.

We kid, of course. 9NEWS' Sochi crew will be doing a more in-depth story about the Russians and the culture during 9NEWS' coverage of the games.
