GREELEY - A former funeral director was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years for selling fake funeral arrangements to 14 elderly people in Greeley.

Paul Acuna also cheated taxpayers out of money by forging contracts with the Weld County Department of Human Services.

As owner and operator of Paul's Funeral Service in Greeley, Acuna presold funeral arrangements to residents, taking more than $31,000 for services to be provided upon their death.

He promised the victims that the money would be held in trust and if his business closed, the service would be transferred to another funeral home.

At sentencing Wednesday afternoon, Acuna said he was trying to pay his customers back, despite the fact that he moved to California right after accusations surfaced.

The judge said Acuna chose short-term gains over the welfare of others.
