USA TODAY - A Grammy win doesn't end with a shiny trophy and bragging rights. A week and a half after the Jan. 26 awards show, the night's victors are being feted once again on the charts.
Winners Lorde, Bruno Mars, Daft Punk, Kacey Musgraves and Imagine Dragons enjoyed sizable sales bumps.
The biggest-selling release tied to the Grammys, 2014 Grammy Nominees, held at No. 2 for the second week after selling 87,000 copies, a 47% increase. It's the highest of seven Grammy-goosed albums in the top 10. Some forecasters predicted the compilation would supplant Disney's Frozen soundtrack, which remains No. 1 after selling 94,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
The bigger shock?
"Not a single album sold 100,000 copies the week after the Grammys," says Keith Caulfield, Billboard's associate director of charts/retail. "It's not the first time. This happened in 2009."
Daft Punk, whose four awards included best album and record, saw a 300% spike for Random Access Memories, which rose to No. 10 from No. 39 after selling 30,000, its best sales week since last July.
The triumph by the French electronica duo, which performed Get Lucky with Pharrell, Nile Rodgers and Stevie Wonder, is especially notable considering its relative anonymity.
"They don't have public faces," Caulfield says. "They had three acceptance speeches and we didn't hear them talk. When they performed, they were twiddling knobs and pushing buttons. All those perceived challenges to promoting an album ultimately didn't hurt sales. When you have such a dynamic performance of Get Lucky with Le Freak and Wonder's Another Star, mixing a live band with electronic music and the '60s and '70s, it's a great blending of old school and new school that had everyone on their feet."
Wonder's guest spot brought his Songs in the Key of Life back to the chart, at No. 99, for the first time in more than 30 years.
Bruno Mars, winner of pop vocal album and Sunday's Super Bowl halftime headliner, also got a boost. Unorthodox Jukebox climbed 11 slots to No. 7 with sales of 42,000, up 180%. Doo-Wops & Hooligans sold 16,000, flying to No. 19 from No. 82, up 303%.
Chart reaction is "impressive," says Caulfield, noting, "Bruno is unique compared to pretty much every Super Bowl headliner. He's had only two albums. Almost everyone else has had a much deeper catalog. If you consider that the modern era started with Michael Jackson in 1993, the youngest performer since then was 'N Sync and they co-headlined with Aerosmith. Bruno had the Red Hot Chili Peppers for only one song."
Musgraves' Same Trailer Different Park jumped to No. 12 from No. 28 after selling 27,000, up 177%. Her rise seemed inevitable as soon as she won for country album, "beating Taylor Swift and stars who arguably had bigger public personas than she does," Caulfield says.
Lorde, whose Royals won best song and pop vocal performance, ascends two notches to No. 5 after selling 68,000 copies of Pure Heroine, up 86%.
Imagine Dragons can credit performances on the Grammys and Saturday Night Live for a Nights Visions sales boost of 65%. The album sold 39,000 copies and rises three spots to No. 8. The band, which won for rock performance, "is really set up for another big year," Caulfield says. "People might be finally connecting the showmanship and musicality with the hit records they've been hearing all over the place."
Katy Perry performed Dark Horse, and her Prism is No. 9 with 30,000, up 22%.
New artist winners Macklemore & Ryan Lewis also won rap performance, rap song and rap album, pushing sales of The Heist to 29,000 copies, up 62% and three slots to No. 11.
Drunk in Love, Beyoncé's show-opener with Jay Z, saw a 94% increase on the digital songs chart, but sales of her self-titled album remained flat, dropping one notch to No. 5. "I found it a little curious but not scandalous that the album didn't do much," Caulfield says.
Eight of the top 20 digital songs were performed on the Grammys and enjoyed boosts. Among them: Perry's Dark Horse, 373,000 (up 27%); Imagine Dragons' Radioactive, which the group performed with Kendrick Lamar, 208,000 (up 239%); and Lorde's Royals, 137,000 (up 33%).
