FORT COLLINS - During an especially cold winter, municipalities around the country are running low on liquid de-icer.
Even the Colorado Department of Transportation is having a tough time getting enough. But Fort Collins has been making its own liquid de-icer for five years.
"Fort Collins is kind of innovative. We like to be out there on the edge," said Larry Schneider, superintendent of the Fort Collins Streets Department.
"I don't know of anyone else along the Front Range that's making salt brine," added Schneider.
Schneider petitioned the city council years ago to purchase roughly $150,000 worth of equipment.
He says in a winter like this one, that investment is paying off.
"When you have a winter like this, and there's a shortage of product, it really helps you kind of fill that void," said Schneider.
He says people from other cities in Colorado have been asking him about the process in the hopes of potentially following suit.
