KUSA - When the Avalanche drafted Nathan MacKinnon they were candid when saying that he was going to be something special. In just his rookie season, the No. 1 overall draft pick is proving them right.

MacKinnon scored his 22nd goal of the season against the New York Islanders Saturday night which ties him for seventh on the Avalanche's all-time list for goals in a season by a rookie.

The 18-year old is a single goal shy of tying the same person that made the decision to draft him - who also happens to be a member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and a legend for the Avalanche - Joe Sakic.

MacKinnon is on pace to score 30 goals (32 is record held by Marek Svatos in 2005-06) and record 62 points (78 is the record held by Paul Stastny in 2006-07). He's statistically on par with some of the best players in Avalanche history and has plenty of time to solidify this season as the best ever by a Colorado rookie.
