DENVER- A part of the Sixth Avenue freeway closed down Friday night. The weekend closure is part of a construction project.
Both directions of Sixth Avenue closed from Sheridan Boulevard to Interstate 25. It will reopen 5 a.m. on Monday.
The Colorado Department of Transportation will be replacing several bridges including the Knox Court bridge and part of the Federal bridge.
"All of this is part of an effort to reconnect the community with better bridges, rebuild Barnum Park, and alleviate congestion problems along 6th," Amy Ford with CDOT said.
After Sixth Avenue reopens on Monday, Federal Boulevard will be down to one lane in each directions.
There will eventually be a new bridge at Knox Court and a new bridge at Federal Boulevard.
CDOT said the goal is to replace six bridges that have been deteriorating.
The $98 million project should take about two years to complete.
