DENVER - Forbes is out with its latest annual ranking of the nation's 20 fastest growing cities in terms of population and economic growth -- and Denver has jumped higher on the list.

Metro Denver ranks No. 6 in Forbes' 2014 estimation, up from No. 16 on the 2013 list.

Forbes says Denver's population growth rate was 1.75 percent last year, but the ranking isn't solely based on population increase.

Forbes also took into account 2013 job-growth rates, growth in gross metro product (each city's goods and services), unemployment rates and median salaries for college-educated workers in comparing the 100 largest U.S. metro areas.

Austin, Texas, tops the Forbes fastest-growing list for the fourth year in a row. It's followed by Raleigh, N.C.; Phoenix; Dallas; and Salt Lake City.

Texas has four cities in the top 20 and three in the top 10: Austin, Dallas and Houston.

Neighboring Utah has three metro areas in the top 20: Salt Lake, Ogden and Provo.
