CALIFORNIA - For one northern California couple, even living in Gold Country couldn't anticipate the treasure trove they unearthed.
The couple stumbled upon more than 1,400 gold coins buried in rusting cans on their property while walking their dog last February. No panning of gold was necessary for one of the largest discovery of gold coins ever unearthed in the U.S.
The uncirculated gold coins are in mint condition and date back to 1847 to 1894.
Some of the coins are so rare they could sell for a million dollars apiece. Experts believe the load to be worth at least 10 million.
The unemployed couple are in their 40s and chose to remain anonymous.
They plan to show off some of the coins at the American Numismatic Association's National Money Show in Atlanta this weekend.
