The State Senate gave preliminary approval Monday to a state synthetic pot ban to go along with a new federal ban. The measure passed on the final possible day because some lawmakers opposed making "Spice" possession the same as having heroin or cocaine.
Sponsors changed the ban to weaken penalties for having the drug, which is widely available on the Internet and was legal until recently.
The "Spice" ban was the first of several marijuana-related measures up for debate Monday night. Senators also planned to consider drunken driving standards for marijuana, along with new regulations for how the drug can be sold.
