John Caudle, now 16, pleaded guilty in March 2011 to second-degree murder and reckless manslaughter. He could serve up to 22 years for the first charge and 6 years for the second charge. Both charges are to be served concurrently.

Caudle was charged as an adult and was facing up to 60 years in prison under the plea deal.

Court documents obtained by the 9Wants To Know Investigators indicate 14-year-old John Caudle confessed to the killings after his arrest.

Caudle was stopped on Oct. 28, 2009 in Fairplay, a three and a half hour drive north from his family's home in Monte Vista.

Park County deputies who couldn't reach the young driver's family asked Rio Grande County deputies to go to the house. They were already there.

Tracy and Joanne Rinebarger were found by a family member. They were shot to death in their bedroom.

Court documents say Caudle turned two .22 caliber pistols on his mother after an Oct. 27, 2009 argument.

"Caudle said the reason he shot Joanne Rinebarger was because he did not want to do household chores," the affidavit read.

Caudle confessed he hid in the laundry room until his stepfather Tracy arrived home and then shot him as he walked past his hiding spot.

Court documents indicate Caudle told investigators that after the murders, he played on the computer and watched movies that night before driving his stepfather's truck to school the next day.

His friends and teachers recalled to investigators how happy Caudle seemed that day.

Caudle's grandfather found his parents' bodies on Oct. 28, 2009.

When he was stopped in Park County later that day, Caudle told deputies he was planning to drive another two hours north to live with an uncle in Dacono.

Caudle has been in isolation at the Rio Grande County Jail since being charged as an adult in December 2009. His defense team told the court Caudle had been subjected to intense emotional abuse by his parents.
