Sixty-year-old Frederick Barrett was arrested Wednesday by officers posing as forest rangers who wanted to talk about wildfire danger.
The U.S. Marshals Service says officers took Barrett into custody after identifying him by a tattoo on his hand.
Authorities say Barrett escaped from a Florida prison in 1979 while serving a life sentence for the 1971 death of a 71-year-old man who picked up Barrett and another man who were hitchhiking.
Authorities say Barrett had escaped and been captured twice before.
The Montrose Daily Press reports Barrett had been living near Montrose since 1994.
