"Up here being at a small school, we do have a lot of teachers that can cover cross-curriculum," Schuyler, a teacher at Lyons Middle/Senior High School, said. "You have to make it work, and I think it's actually a good thing if you can get the teachers in that can cover multiple classes."
The Lyons Lions have fewer than 300 students at the high school level. Yet, it scored an A+ rating on the ColoradoSchoolGrades.com website.
ColoradoSchoolGrades.com was put together by 18 different advocacy agencies from around the state.
"It just was very difficult for the average consumer, parent, family to find out easy to understand information about how their school was performing," Tim Taylor, spokesperson for ColoradoSchoolGrades.com, said.
Taylor says parents should take advantage of this free service so they can make informed decisions about school choice.
"What we took were all of the inputs that the Colorado Department of Education already evaluates and already takes in," Taylor said. "We just translated it."
Lyons is a small town located north of Boulder. It's known as the double gateway to the mountains.
"I think the success at Lyons starts with the fact that we're a small school, but in a larger district," Greg Winger, principal, said.
Winger says have the support of the St. Vrain Valley School District is the foundation, but it is not the main ingredient to the school's success. He says they have built a strong synergy with students, staff and parents.
"We're still a part of the Front Range, but it's a tiny community," Schuyler said. "It's a tiny school. We build relationships in this school."
The numbers prove it.
"We have over 80 percent of our kids involved in extra-curricular activities," Winger said. "You're really only as strong as your student body and your parents and staff."
In Lyons, they say the school's athletics and other programs are main events for the entire town.
"We get into all the games that they have, and they always have lots of community events," Dave Rodefer, resident and owner of Dave's Diner in town, said. "It really helps pull the community together."
Lyons has been pretty successful, too, taking home numerous state titles in athletics and other programs.
"This isn't just a one-year bounce that we've experienced," Winger said. "There's a tradition of excellence at Lyons."

"We do well with what we have," Schuyler said.
