The cantaloupe is available at King Soopers, Safeway, Walmart and Whole Foods. However, only 30 percent of the fields have been planted this year, so the supply will be limited.
In order to continue their legacy and rebuild their name, Rocky Ford Growers Association was established to ensure the highest health and safety requirements.
Cutting edge technology costing $800,000 was invested to insure proper preparation of the fruit. The additional safety requirements include new packing and tracking procedures.
The tracking program is called LeafTrack and will track every box of Rocky Ford Cantaloupe from the field to the delivery point. It also monitors field locations, travel routes, temperatures, and more.
In addition, new field procedures have been instated including daily field inspection, field worker training, and clean equipment.
A full time food safety manager has also been hired to insure USDA requirements are being met. In addition to the Rocky Ford safety procedures, King Soopers has safety procedures set in place as well.
If consumers wish to clean their Rocky Ford Cantaloupe at home, they are encouraged to rinse, scrub and dry the cantaloupe.
