According to Denver Police, the shooting happened in the 6300 block of East 39th Avenue around noon Tuesday.

They were arresting a suspect at a hotel on Colfax Avenue for a weapons charge and a controlled-substance charge. The suspect was taken into custody.

While transporting the suspect, police say the suspect was able to remove his handcuffs and attack the officer who was driving the car.

An officer following that transport vehicle noticed the officer being attacked and came to his aid. The suspect was shot by police at that time.

The suspect was taken to the hospital but later pronounced dead. The suspect is not being identified at this time.

Both the officer driving the car and the officer who was following the DPD car during the transport were also taken to the hospital, but both had minor injuries.

Police are still investigating the shooting.
