The book depicts bear history in Colorado. More specifically, it includes death and near-death experiences from both grizzlies and black bears. Some of the stories include President Theodore Roosevelt's hunting experiences, Zebulon Pike's exploring, and the death of Colorado's last grizzly.

It also has extensive contemporary stories such as the death of a logger, two campers who nearly lost their lives, and a pair of scientists who found themselves in a bear den.

Prichett has won numerous awards including the "WILLA Fiction Award" for "Sky Bridge," and the "Milkweed National Fiction Prize" and "PEN USA Award" for "Hell's Bottom, Colorado."
