BRECKENRIDGE, Colo. (AP) - A Summit County judge has issued a gag order in the case of a man facing charges alleging he struck his wife in the back of her head with a hatchet.

Prosecutors say 43-year-old Michael Newcomb is charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon and menacing. The woman needed stitches for her injuries.

The woman was taken to a hospital Jan. 31 with a skull fracture from the hatchet and a blow to the front of her head from a metal pipe.

According to the Summit Daily, Judge Edward Casias granted a defense motion Tuesday asking the media to refrain from publishing information that might prejudice possible jurors.

Family members have protested, saying Newcomb has not been allowed to tell his side of the story.
