TORRINGTON, Wyo. - Strong, gusty winds created what one Wyoming State Patrol trooper labeled as a 'dirt blizzard' on the roads Sunday.

The hazardous-driving conditions and zero visibility from blowing crop land dirt caused some scary moments for motorists traveling on US 85 south of Torrington.

WYDOT closed the roads at 1 p.m. and did not open them until the evening.

Authorities responded to several non-injury crashes in that area. They also rescued at least 20 stranded motorists in the road closure area during the height of the wind storm.

Several patrol vehicles sustained minor damage due to sandblasting of decals and paint in the wind.
