KUSA - One of Denver's most celebrated public art works was vandalized early Sunday morning.

9NEWS viewers sent pictures of the Big Blue Bear covered in green paint.

Denver police spokesman John White says they're investigating the vandalism of the public art piece reported to police around 9 a.m. Sunday.

The bear, which peeks into the  Colorado Convention Center, has been a target of past pranks including a giant yarn ball-and-chain tied to his large foot. None of the pranks involved harming the actual piece of art.

The 40-foot tall bear is the work of local artist Lawrence Argent and is titled "I See What You Mean." It is better known as the blue bear and has been on display since 2005.

White says they haven't determined how vandals were able to get the paint on the bear.
