DENVER - Flames could be seen coming out of the roof of Church of the Ascension, located at 600 Gilpin St., a century-old Episcopal parish, as firefighters arrived on scene shortly after 3 a.m.

Several people in the neighborhood watched as firefighters worked for more than an hour to put the fire out.

Due to fire and smoke damage the church as well as Bright Star Early Learning Center, which is located inside the church, are closed for the day.

According to the church's website, the church holds a daily service of Morning Prayer every weekday at 8 a.m.

Calls were made to parents letting them know the church is closed.

No one was injured in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
