MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - Authorities say a man who was shot by a Manitou Springs police officer was wanted for escape.

KRDO-TV reports officers were responding to a CrimeStoppers tip near the historic La Fon Motel at about 2 a.m. Saturday when 37-year-old Christopher Clemens began firing at them. An officer returned fire and struck Clemens, who remains hospitalized in stable condition.

None of the officers was injured.

Clemens is accused of walking away from the Community Corrections of El Paso County on March 27 and had not been seen since. His criminal record dates to 1997 and includes convictions of theft, forgery, assault, escape, motor vehicle theft and drug-related crimes.
