KUSA - It's a shocking thing to find on your door, and that's why it's effective.
Right in the middle of a signature drive to recall Democratic state senator Evie Hudak, door hangers are showing up in Hudak's district in Westminster and Arvada.
The hangers say the people out collecting the 18,000 signatures necessary to set a recall are potential criminals; some are even possible sex offenders.
The sponsor of the hangers is the Democracy Defense Fund. The Colorado Secretary of State's Office says it's a committee out of Arvada that's raised $25,000 to keep Hudak in office.
9NEWS called the contact person for the committee. She said she wasn't behind the hanger, but added, "If that's what it takes to stop the recall, I'm supportive."
The recall organizer says the door hanger campaign smacks of outside influence.
The door hanger claims it is not a new argument. The company gathering signatures hasn't, in the past, done criminal background checks on its signature gatherers.
There is nothing to suggest anyone gathering signatures this time around has any criminal background. The recall's organizer described a few of them as college kids.
The recall effort has until the beginning of December to come up with nearly 19,000 signatures to force a recall election.
