KUSA - A 91-year-old man died from hypothermia Monday night and wasn't found until Tuesday morning outside of a retirement home.
Robert Kopher was found outside the Sugar Valley Estates Independent Living Residences in Loveland.
An investigation revealed that he tried to go inside the building or his vehicle. However, he was unable to get inside and stayed outside in the extreme cold.
The coroner says the death was ruled accidental. There was no sign of foul play.
Family members say Kopher used to live at Sugar Valley Estates. They say he had recently moved to an assisted living home as he struggled with dementia.
Kopher was likely going to visit his friend, a woman with whom he'd lived for years, his family tells 9NEWS. But on Monday night, he never checked out of his assisted living home and didn't tell that woman he was coming to see her, either.
She told 9NEWS she is "devastated" to know how he died.
