Richard McLean and Edith Stevens of Boulder haven't commented publicly about the case because their neighbors Don and Susie Kirlin have said they plan to appeal.
However, the Camera newspaper says it obtained a letter in which McLean and Stevens explain what happened.
Colorado's adverse-possession law allows someone to gain possession of property after using it unchallenged for 18 years. A judge in October granted part of the Kirlins' land to McLean and Stevens, who said they had been using it to access their backyard for 25 years.
The Camera reports that McLean and Stevens told friends in a letter that the land in question is 11 percent of the Kirlins' total land, and that the Kirlins could still build their planned dream home on their remaining land.
They say the dispute began after the Kirlins tried building a fence blocking McLean and Stevens from getting to their back yard.
Susie Kirlin says she disagrees with much of the letter.
