"I didn't really think the painting was that beautiful," said Tammy Bullock, who kept the picture in the back of a closet for more than 10 years.
Every time she moved she thought about throwing it away, but luckily she decided to keep it, and do some research into its worth. For years she was unsuccessful until she saw a segment on 9NEWS in December talking about Worthpoint.com.
Apparently the painting was worth tens of thousands of dollars. Sotheby's put it on the auction block Thursday. The reserve of $65,000 was reached and the final bid was for $103,000. After fees and commission, Bullock expects to get nearly $65,000.
She plans on putting the money to good use.
"On the top of my list is going to be taking care of my son's eyes. He has a disease on his cornea, and he needs special contact lenses, and we haven't been able to afford those contacts," said Bullock.
Bullock also wants to donate some money to the people who've helped her in the past.
She will be putting what's left towards her daughter's college education.
