15 years ago Patrick Meiering was hiking with his Chocolate Labrador Zuke, when he realized the dog was exhausted. He fed Zuke a piece of his energy bar and the dog perked up. It was that moment that Patrick decided to create health, all-natural treats for dogs.
He named the company Zuke's, after his furry companion.
At first, Meiering created the treats in his garage, but now he's got an entire staff based in Downtown Durango. As you might have guessed bringing your dog to work is encouraged. The best part is they occasionally get to taste test the product.
Zuke's offers ten different products, in a variety of flavors. The treats, chews and biscuits for dogs and cats are made with premium meats, grains, fruits, vegetables and oils. They never use harsh preservatives or artificial colors and flavors. The company promises it will not put anything in its products the employees wouldn't eat themselves.
The treats are available at a number of stores in Colorado, including Whole Foods and REI locations. The company gives a portion of the sales to a dog and cat cancer fund.
Zuke's was recently selected as one of the 50 Colorado Companies to Watch by the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade. Every Thursday 9NEWS reports about another company, highlighting its success in this difficult economy.
