KUSA - Dozens of Red Cross volunteers from all over Colorado flocked to Fort Collins for a three-day Disaster Academy.

"I felt it's time to come and help to get certified," said Sarah Mondry, who spent her Sunday with mannequins as she learned resuscitation techniques.

She watched last fall as floods decimated thousands of homes across Colorado.

"I saw it on TV, of all the chaos and people in trouble, and so that's when I decided I needed to get certified," added Mondry.

Red Cross volunteer Carol Brom came from Sterling, Colo., to learn.

"We had a little over a week of no flush because the river took out our pumping stations," said Brom.

Northern Colorado is hosting this Red Cross Disaster Academy - and for many of the volunteers, recent events hit close to home.
"The floods hit Northern Colorado so hard," said Adam Rae with Red Cross.

"God forbid that ever happens again. We're stronger," he added.
Volunteers are always welcome, said Rae.
