KUSA - Historically, Colorado is No. 1 in avalanche fatalities.

Avalanches don't care how smart skiers or snowboarders are or if they have the best equipment. But that doesn't mean the precautions are moot.

Becky Brock with Alpine Rescue Team talked to 9NEWS Friday morning about some tips for those who are going to encounter avalanche conditions this season:

Be searchable:

  • Carry proper equipment (for avalanche terrain, that includes a shovel, probe, and transceiver)
  • This helps for both companion rescue and/or professional rescuer if you are caught in an avalanche

Be educated:

  • Know conditions of where you'll be traveling, and consider the risks you'd be taking
  • Know how to use your safety gear

Currently, Colorado has had six fatalities this season. Nationally, there have been 15 avalanche fatalities.
