Denver's Metro State plans $12M athletic complex on south side

In the wake of that campaign comes Metropolitan State University of Denver, which has designs on a complex of its own. The difference – besides cost – is there won't be any uproar from the surrounding community.

That's because once it's completed, local citizens will be just as likely to use the proposed $12 million facility as Roadrunner teams. And the complex, which will house Metro's baseball, softball and men's and women's tennis and soccer programs, will undoubtedly be an improvement over the open space at the site south of the Colfax Avenue viaduct adjacent to Shoshone Street east of I-25.

"It will truly be a community asset," said Metro State president Stephen Jordan. "And it could be a great economic boost for the city as well."

When City Councilwoman Judy Montero toured the site with school officials, she suggested a walking trail and running track be incorporated into the facility so members of the community could use it. That idea has become reality.
